By Amanda JamesLaw360 (May 12, 2019, 8:02 PM EDT) — Kirkland’s meteoric growth showed no sign of slowing as the firm broke the 2,000 attorney mark to grab the top spot on the Law360 400, our annual ranking of the largest law firms in the country.
The Law360 400 features the largest U.S.-based law firms and international firms with a U.S. component as measured by domestic attorney head count. At Kirkland & Ellis LLP, the number of attorneys grew by just over 14% over the course of 2018. With 2,116 domestic lawyers, the firm has over 300 more attorneys than the No. 2 ranked firm on this year’s list.
This year the same top 10 firms held sway, though the rankings shifted from the previous year. Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP jumped from No. 6 to No. 4, skipping past Jones Day and Sidley Austin LLP. DLA Piper, ranked No. 8 last year, moved up to No. 7, bumping Skadden down a spot.
These 10 are growing at an average rate of 3.86%, which is slightly slower than the top 100 firms overall, growing at an average rate of 4.74%.
The majority of firms that added to their ranks last year did so through mergers.
Strasburger & Price LLP was swallowed up by Clark Hill PLC. Hunton & Williams and Andrews Kurth Kenyon combined to create what is now Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. Foley & Lardner LLPcombined with Gardere Wynne Sewell and kept its name.
Congratulations to all the firms that made this year’s Law360 400.
Methodology: Law360 surveyed U.S. law firms, and vereins or similar structures with a U.S. component, on domestic attorney and partner headcount information as of Dec. 31, 2018. Firms based outside the U.S. were not surveyed, and only attorneys based in the 50 states and the District of Columbia were included in the responses. Firms that have shareholders, members or principals in lieu of partners have those numbers listed in the “partner” field.
